And as unhappiness proliferates, so does suspicion. Every husband with a much younger wife thinks she is seeing someone else… or even worse. So the husband becomes vigilant, observing her every move, detaching from contact, withdrawing from emotional attachment. He imagines the worst… and in doing so creates the world he dreads most.
And so with Miles. He started to watch Suzie's every move, greeted every request with extreme suspicion, every person she met drew resentment from Miles. Poisoning his world, poisoning his life...
Until out of the imagined misdeeds and cheating, a plan emerges. Horrendous. You don't want to follow it as the end cannot be good. If you catch her in the act, it's over for sure. If you catch her doing nothing, you show your hand… and it's over for sure. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't. But better to be taking action when the damning comes.
So he put his plan into action to find out once and for all what Suzie was up to. Miles was going to take care of business like he once did. Or so he thought he did. That's another problem with age – the legend grows much bigger than the truth. And when the time comes, you can fool yourself into action, but you can never fool yourself into acceptance of the consequences.
You can only try to live with them…
